When I set out to write this album the pandemic had just begun, and like many others I found myself with extra time on my hands. I had been meaning for quite a while to write songs exclusively for corporate worship in the Church, which for me meant that I habitually put it off. Finally, I could ignore the urge no longer and began to write and structure the album. A misconception many people harbor about worship leaders is that, by virtue of being on the stage, we must be more spiritual than everyone else (as if we have a secret conduit to God). As a worship leader I know this to be laughably false and that I am often more sinful than the people that Jesus has called me to lead. This album was written during a time of depression and intense spiritual frustration; a frustration that made writing about God difficult. Fair or not, right or wrong, it helped shape the songs that I wrote. I’m probably to blame for much of what I felt at the time, because most of my own problems are self-inflicted, but as I kept writing I began to realize that I was not alone in what I was feeling. I began to notice a shift outward from my own dilemmas to a concern for my fellow Christians, who may have been struggling the same as I, and I wanted those emotions redeemed for the Kingdom. These songs are for the lost, the broken, the scoundrels, and the forgotten; for anyone who has met the real Jesus and for those who haven’t yet met Him. Above all they are for the Church. Martin Luther once said, “Music is next to Theology,” and this is my small contribution to the former. I won’t be so arrogant as to think that this album will have the reach that I desire, but if just one person is furthered in their relationship with their Creator, I will have done my job. I hope we meet someday. Until then, Morris Catterwelle
